The Assault of Sapun-Mountain on 7th of May, 1944
Sapun Mountain is located 12 km from Sevastopol.
It is a natural barrier on the city approaches, therefore the battle actions took place on its slopes, the 250
day defence in 1941-2 and in the days of the liberation in 1944.
The
height of the hill is 230 mtr above sea level, it had 6 tiers of trenches,
In April - May of 1944, the Germans could fire up to 100 bullets a minute on every attacking Soviet fighter,
Even in such conditions the Sapun Mountain was taken in 9 hours.
In the main building, which was opened on the 4th of November 1959, there is a 25.5mtr - 5.5mtr painting of
the battle as well as photos and items that were used in that great battle
The Obelisk contains the names of the 240 Heroes of the Soviet Union, which liberated the City, and on the
9th of May 1970 the Eternal Flame was Lit.
